The book explores what was going on around the Richardsons that helped mold their attitudes and actions. From the 17th c. ferment in northern England that enabled Quakerism to catch fire, to the economic opportunities in the Delaware Valley and the war against Great Britain in the 18th, the Richardsons mirrored their times. They reflected the tectonic shifts in the 19th c. as the US embraced market capitalism, individualism, multiple reform movements, and new technologies.
